Selecting the Image, opening it in Photoshop, and Making a Duplication Layer of the Background. Welcome to Graphic Bible, today I want to show you how to use the Magic Wand tool in Adobe Illustrator CC. This tool will help you to select. To activate the magic wand in the editor click the tool icon in the toolbar. This will load the tool options bar with the tolerance setting and other tool options for the magic wand tool. In the Preview app on your Mac, click the Show Markup Toolbar button (if the Markup toolbar isn’t showing), click the Selection Tools menu, then choose the Smart Lasso tool. Trace the edge of the image you want to extract. Make sure the image’s edge is within the thick border that appears as you trace. The Magic Wand tool is a selection tool. It allows you to quickly select areas of your images and make independent edits to it. It’s most used often to select solid backgrounds and color areas. It doesn’t work as well, for example, on an image with a distinct gradient or blurry features.

Motion graphics expert Mikey Borup explains how to use his super helpful Magic Wand tool in After Effects.
The magic wand tool is one of the most useful tools in Adobe Photoshop. It is a great way to avoid having to manually select portions of your scene. It’s great inside Photoshop but if you are looking to use the magic wand tool in After Effects you aren’t going to find one. Adobe has not made a magic wand tool native in Adobe After Effects but lucky for us, Premiumbeat blog writer and After Effects expert Mikey Borup has created a free Magic Wand Tool for AE.
To install the free preset go to https://gumroad.com/l/magicwand and click the big red donate button. After you click the button you can select to donate some money or simply put in 0 (but hey, supporting is good karma!). After you download, install it into the preset folder on your computer and you should be good to go. Now all you have to do is drag the MagicWand effect onto any layer you want.
Mikey has also created this very helpful video tutorial showing how to use the effect the video covers:
- Using the Magic Wand Effect
- Moving the Point Control
- Adjusting Tolerance
